POPPY'S STORY

26-09-09 Poor Poppy is just 6 months old and is our latest emergency case in need of very special and immediate care. This unlucky girl needs a liver shunt operation and needs it quickly or she won't last.
Poppy is a lovely girl, very affectionate and friends with everyone she meets. Please, we are asking for anyone with a good relationship with their vet and who can get a good, low quote for a liver shuntm operation to get in touch.  Sadly the operation that Poppy needs can run into the thousands and of course every penny is a struggle for us and has to come from somewhere.
Her owner's no longer wanted her but we've taken her in and will do everything in our power to save her life, but we cannot without your help. Please help us find the help that this little angel needs and call us on 01269 843094 if you can help.  We would appreciate quotes from any vets to get this operation done as quickly as possible.

29-09-09 UPDATE

Poppy is very charming but very quiet for a pup. Walking her I see why - poor Poppy has damaged eyes, in fact I fear she is blind. Her liver enzymes are so high that I guess damage to the sensitive retinas has taken place. If only she had had this problem addressed early. It's hard and very sad to believe that someone with an extremely responsible job could ignore their responsibilities and cause this suffering.
This has been one of the most expensive weekends ever here and the most discouraging.  Dumped pups, neglected dogs and sadness and despair, thank goodness for those of you who agree to help. THANK YOU.

01-10-09 UPDATE

I am very sad to tell all of you who care like we do, that Poppy had the special scan today. Sadly this showed she needed an internal and external liver shunt and multiple of both. The prognosis is very poor and the vet said she may well not make it. The cost of this operation also would be very very high - multiple thousands. That was not what has made me make the following decision, but her quality of life. If we operated it would have to do this whilst she was well and this would be painful and stop her having the fun she cis able to have at the moment and it could also kill her. I have decided she should live the life she has to the full and thankfully her fosterer has agreed to assist with this and love her until she will be put to sleep for ever. For those who sent a donation, I would like to use it to pay the vet bill so far and for her special food and anything else she may need to make her short life ahead wonderful. Thank you all for your prayers and support. I am so sorry.

04-10-09 UPDATE FROM POPPY'S FOSTERER

Poppy has settled well and quickly into our home. She is a little princess who is impeccably behaved, loves cuddles and gives lovely kisses. She is generally quiet but does have moments of cheeky puppyness. My other dogs have accepted her readily and she is also enjoying her walks along the river. We have no real idea of a time scale with her illness so will just take it one day at a time and make sure she enjoys each day. The steroids do make her constantly hungry but the vet has allowed her the treat of a little cottage cheese and chicken and she is really enjoying that.
Thank you to everyone for all your prayers and good wishes for her.

15-10-09 UPDATE

On Sunday I went to visit the wonderful Poppy at her foster home. I had been so touched by her story and as her foster mummy lived not too far from me I asked Sylvia to ask if it would be okay to visit. Sally her foster mummy contacted me and we had several emails before visiting on Sunday. I was so surprised to see this beautiful but small puppy. Poppy is just like a normal puppy, very playful but small and thin (due to her condition). She is so affectionate. I took along a cuddly squeaky dog toy which she loved and she played with for a long time. She loves cuddles and gives the most beautiful kisses. The only sad thing is that when you pick her up and cuddle her she wont make eye contact, which is a sign she is not used to cuddles previously.
Sally and her wonderful family have filled this little dogs life with love and cuddles and kisses. It moved me so much to see how loved she is. Her mummy is so devoted to her as is her husband and her wonderful two daughters. Whilst they understand she may not have much time left they are determined to fill it with love and that moved me so much. Sally's husband summed it up when he said "we still keep hoping for a miracle" - I cannot agree more. To meet Poppy is to love her and this little baby has stolen my heart totally. I hope to visit her again soon. To Sally and family - thank you for loving this little dog. She is part of their family and is part of my heart. Please say your prayers for her for she so deserves them. When I left I shed many tears for the injustice of this little baby.

Poppy is doing really well at the moment.   She is putting weight on, is happy and energetic and is enjoying life. She is still enjoying her walks and gets more playful all the time. She is doing well on Hepatic support and to meet her you wouldn't know there was much wrong at the moment.  She still has a slight cough, but she copes with it well. We are trying so hard not to get attached but she is such a poppet it is difficult.
She doesn't know she is ill, or that she is going to lose her life to her illness. That makes us feel better. We really try not to think about her past and how badly she was let down by her owner. We try not to think about her body getting more and more poisoned every day. And we try not to think about what we will need to do for her when her little body can't cope anymore.
When she arrived we were so full of hope for a bright future. She was going to have her op and go off to a lovely forever home.   Poppy is now our dog in our hearts. We love her as we do our own and we know she is going to break a lot of hearts. But, we know she is now very happy and is knowing love and cuddles for the first time in her short life and that gives us great consolation.

Poppy continues to do well. She is looking very well right now and is still enjoying daily life. When she arrived my vets prognosis was 2 months,,,,Well, that time has now gone but Poppy is still well. She grows in confidence and becomes more playful each day. We have been told that when she becomes ill it will happen quickly, so I guess we are now just hoping and praying for Poppy to enjoy a Christmas with us, that would be just lovely! The tree is up and decorated and is as yet untouched by this cheeky young lady/
Thanks again all for your love and best wishes and a Happy Christmas to you all,,,x
