The blog of the unwanted pups!

We all want to love and protect our kids, give them only the best in life, and never subject them to hurt or pain, don’t we? Well yes the intension is there, but sadly poor Leah falls short of this now and then some!
Last Saturday I had a lovely surprise when Leah and husband Jay turned up out of the blue (having driven 3 hours) to “pop” in. As she walked through the door, and after the initial shock, I asked her if she’d like to hand raise 13 one hour old puppies as a vets had just called them in. Well poor Jason, his jaw dropped, and you could see the look of despair on his face. The whole mother like daughter thing certainly applies when it comes to us.  Leah is great at hand raising but finds the whole homing thing very sad as the hand raises are so much part of your life, therefore poor Jay goes through a battle each time and also has to share in Leah's heartache, sleepless nights and wrecked social life!
Anyway they were due to leave Sunday morning and the vets had not turned up with the pups, so we presumed they had found a surrogate mum for them. Instead I loaded Leah, and her already packed car, up to the hilt with things that needed dropping off and two foster pups to be taken to their new foster mum.

At 3pm to my surprise the pups arrived from the vets!  Somebody had been walking in the park and had found 13 pups, barely an hour old, dumped under a park bench. They rushed them to the vets who kept them over night, sadly loosing 4 to hyperthermia and the fact that they had not received the essential colostrums that they needed!  I rang Leah, and she kindly agreed to take them (although her other hand raise pup had only gone two days before and I’m sure she was looking forward to a proper night’s sleep!).  Mike and Corrine who was dropping a dog up to us that needed moving agreed to take the pups back with them most of the way and meet Leah on route!
Since then Leah has had 45 mins of sleep at a time, feeding every two hours (but it takes an hour to feed!) I feel sad when she calls me in sheer despair worried she is going to loose one. I know the heartache she is going through! Sadly she has lost three, I suppose it was inevitable with the start they had in life but it was so unnecessary! If they had given the pups even a few hours, or days on the mum to help them along the way! Imagine how the poor bitch must be suffering!
Anyway thought it would be really nice to keep a blog on the litter so whilst Leah is here working at Many Tears (I like to get my pound of flesh from her! Ha ha ha) she will keep a blog for you………..

05-10-09

Well we are all here at Many Tears, my home for the next month! It has been an incredibly sad, yet rewarding week! The pups are trying so hard, but sadly I have lost three this week. They almost didn’t stand a chance! All of them are severely dehydrated, have diarrhea and are giving up the will to live! I can’t bear the thought of loosing another little soul! Tonight I have sat up with them all night and am just approaching my 47th hour awake (well zombiefied!) they are holding on, I have been dripping them all night to get them hydrated. I keep praying for them, hope that you will do the same.

07-10-09

Well we are all still here. My tiny girl has picked up a little and all seem a little more settled on their milk. Would really like to name them, but know that it is the kiss of death to do that, so until they are older they will have to sick to the identifying spots of nail varnish on their bottoms!
So far the god send that I have got due to kind souls donating it is a small heated pad that I can plug in, what I really need is a puppy pad that you can put in the microwave that keeps warm for when we are driving etc, although the hot water bottles are good they go cold a lot quicker! The other thing they love is their big cuddly toy! As they have no mum, they spend a lot of time suckling from each other, this is really bad for them as 1) they constantly drink wee and 2) it makes the one being suckled very sore! People keep telling me to separate them, well for anybody who has ever hand raised you will know that they try a lot harder with company, often when they are on their own they will just give up. So anyway the cuddly toy has given them something else to snuggle into.
I hope that we continue to progress, and I will get more pictures asap.

09-10-09

The human race never fails to amaze me.......people can be so heartless, such as the people who dumped the pups and then all the amazing people who have kindly donated heat pads for my puppies. The generosity shown has been amazing.........so an enormous thank you from me and my pups.
We had a relatively good night. The pups are eating well, although their tummies still aren’t fully settled. Whilst feeding at a ridiculous time last night, I found myself studying the pups trying to decide what they will grow into. Well an hour and half later I found myself totally stumped! The problem is that it adds to the problem of hand raising them as I have no idea how big they should be, or will be, which means I have no idea on how much they should be eating. If I was to go on what they would like to eat i would think that they are going to grow into Great Danes!!!!! Arrggghhh!!!
So for now I’m going on a medium sized dog, maybe collie cross due to the little white tips most of them carry!

Anyway till tomorrow...........

10-10-09

Well the pups have been totally spoilt with all the lovely heat pads and good wishes that people have been sending.
They were getting to be grubby little things - I guess when there are 6 they just do get mucky and the main reason is that they constantly suckle off each other. Anyway we were very blessed today to have some great helpers, who have helped bath and dry each pup, once again returning them to their former glory!
I have had an ongoing problem with feeding the pups, they suck too hard to drink from the bottle that comes with the milk as the nipples already have pre-cut holes (which are too big!) and they end up drowning themselves. So I have been syringe feeding them, but now as they are getting stronger they have now twice sucked the nipple right off, nearly swallowing it!!!!!
I obviously cannot risk that, but trying to find a bottle which comes with nipples that don’t have pre cut holes; I just can’t seem to find any. Any ideas?
As they get bigger they also are getting naughtier!!! For their size they are really strong and can heave their way out of the pre-feeding box to mug me feeding the one before. Today they are 15 days (can’t believe it). Bruiser has opened his eyes today, whilst the rest still are being lazy!! They are very late opening their eyes, guess they are onto a good thing, lay there, get fed, cuddled and washed without having to do anything.

12-10-09

It's been a big day!!!!! After me calling them all lazy they have all started to open their eyes! Yippee I have little people now. They are getting naughtier and naughtier, occasionally barking and growling and today one of the twins even howled bless him. There is a constant supply of washing (not that there isn't here anyway, but now there is even more!).
Well I've solved the bottle issue too, Jacqui Baker cleverly suggested premature baby bottles and although I couldn't find those, I did find a Tommee Tippee closer to nature bottle which has a slow flow teat - just what I've been looking for. Well the puppies approve, not one mistake feeding, no guzzling etc, just very happy puppies. The funniest thing is that they are so tiny compared to it and the teat is so big compared to them.
Have added a load of pictures to wet every bodies appetite. Oh and before I go I should mention last night I had a really bad/low night with one of the twins (the little girl).  She really looked like she was fading again, and didn't want to eat (she is already way under sized compared to the rest).  She became very lethargic and floppy, I really felt I was going to loose her. I fought on through the night and I'm really glad to report that she has picked up and the last feed (on the new bottle) she whooped her food and was much brighter. Hopefully she will continue to get better.
Thanks for all the advice people email in.

My little white puppy girl seems to have some mystery illness/dieses, there is something going on with her nose.  Over 2 days her nose has seemed to receded back, near on to cartilage. I have spoken to numerous vets, all who have never heard of such a thing. It is like she is being eaten alive!!!! Of course I'm beside myself with worry for her. Chris our vet has put her on anti biotic and a fungal spray, and it does look a little less red and sore, but it's too soon to say if it's stopping it. Other than her nose she is extremely happy in herself. She is eating enough for all of them, sucking well and looking like she will pop at any moment!

Everybody else is growing at a rate of knots! They will be 3 weeks on sat I can hardly believe it, where has that time gone!!!????? (Same place as my sleep, lol)!   I will try and get a picture of her for tomorrow, but today has just been too hectic. We had 43 dogs in on Tuesday and then we had another 17 today, just too many, we are over flowing and trying to juggle. today almost looked like an impossibility! Anyway we got through it, and have rescued some delightful dogs.
Might start thinking about names in the next few days.........

LITTLE GIRL

The day from hell! I said that naming them is a kiss of death, and just as I started to think up names my little girl crashed yesterday! Not only did she crashed, but her lump siblings managed to break her leg in the soft crate! I rushed her to the vets, who have cast and bandaged her leg, and given me supplements to try and boost her. Today she is a lot brighter BUT has now got an abscess just under her tail that burst this morning. The vet thinks that this has all come about as she is/was crashing, she is also quite scabby on her skin, again all because of the same thing. She is eating well today and I will just keep praying for her!

LITTLE WHITE GIRL

This is my little white girl. We have taken a photo of her nose you can see what is going on. The medication that she is on does seem to be helping, but I'm not convinced it has stopped it receeding. We will have to wait and see how she gets on.

THE BRUISER BOY

He is a monster!!!!!! Wherever you put him - he wants to be somewhere else!  He is a right little lump, extremely forwardgoing and pushy!

PINK SPOT GIRL

Pink spot girl was one of the smaller pups, but she has well and truly caught up, eating as much as the bruiser boy and sometimes more. She is extremely head strong!

THE BRUISER GIRL

She is a hefty little lump! She is almost as wide as she is long! Very active and very pushy a true lady - ha ha!

THE TWIN BOY

He is known as this as he was almost identical to the little girl and was as tiny when I first got them. He has caught up a lot and is nearly as big as the bruiser now. He eats really well and is always vocal if he feels you're taking too long with the milk!

And just because I can, here they all are in their new and improved accommodation......

As a group they are doing quite well now, but it really shows how low their immune systems still are. I have thought about taking the little girl out from the others due to what's happened to her leg, but they often give up their fight for life if you segregate them, so she will stay with them all.

19-10-09

Well the white girls nose is looking a little better again today, but my little girl's leg isn't looking too great.  It's very swollen above the bandage and is generally not looking good, so we are off to the vets. Otherwise they continue to put on weight and now have their teeth coming through. They are starting to play, occasionally batting each other around the head. I still can't decided what size they are going to be, but the general consensus is medium sized, maybe collie based with something smaller.

Whilst I 'm here I want to take the opportunity to ask everybody to sign the petition for the GSD's that were shot. If you can print out a sheet and get as many signatures as possible it will really help. It is really important that this does not happen again. I was horrified to read of many more cases where the RSPCA had shot other dogs quite a few years before this happened. If this is not exposed god knows what will keep happening!!!!! PLEASE HELP IT IS JUST A SIGNATURE!!!!!!

I know how important this is for mum, especially because of all the north Carolina stuff, this really shouldn't be happening here! We call ourself a nation of animal lovers so let's prove it and stop this barbaric practice happening again.

22-10-09

Hi everyone, it's Natalie, Leah’s friend. I have been staying with Leah since Friday and have grown a new love. When Leah told me she had 6 puppies for me to see, all I could think of is feed, feed, feed. These puppies are such a joy, every morning we wake up and the first thing your greeted with is the puppies and the wonderful noise they make to tell us to hurry up with their bottles, every morning feed we choose what breed they are that day as every day they change looks. Yesterday our pups were Collies, today they are terriers... Who knows?? My gosh these are hungry pups, yesterday was the first day we tried them on solid (mashed up) foods. Well to say we thought they made a mess was a slight understatement anyway, 10 minutes later, 6 pups and a bowl of mashed puppy food, you can imagine what I’m telling you about!!
They did very well though, although the little pink spot girl, took a while, but by their second feed on solids, they had all got the hang of it and all we had to worry about was the state they were in after having a good feed time of rolling around in the delightful food!
These last couple of days have been quite full on here, the little girls leg is still showing signs of concern, we had her x-rayed, and were so shocked as we have never seen an x-ray on such a young pup, to see the gaps between all the bones at the joints was unbelievable and it shows so much why people shouldn’t exercise their dogs at such a young age!! Well anyway the results from the x-ray were not very useful, as we couldn’t find a break, but this does not by any means rule out the fact that she has not got a break. What the x-ray did show us was the amount of swelling to her leg, and shoulder joint, which has now reduced down her leg into her foot, bless her, her little toes are very swollen at the moment. So every day our little girl keeps making us re bandage her leg, as she is getting so much more active now, and the swelling each day goes down so we have to re do her bandage as we don’t want to make it too tight or not tight enough! Please keep your healing thoughts coming her way!!
Our little white girl’s nose is looking better but not on repair, it is not as raw now as it was a couple of days back, but we are hoping her treatment is working slowly, unfortunately I spotted whilst feeding yesterday, the little pink spot girl has a slight mark on her nose which looks like it could be the start of the mystery ‘nose’, so we have put her straight on the medication our white girl is on in hope that we can catch this early! They both went to see the vet yesterday and he was pleased with what we are doing, and hopes these will improve in time.
The rest of the pups are sooo much more active now, and as soon as we open their cage door are flooding out wanting to investigate more. They are also taking a lot more interest in each other, and using their little arms to play with each other and the most fun game of rolling from the top of their bedding area down the hill of bedding. The most adorable thing our little bundles do, is after their bottle feeds have a tendency to lay flat on their backs, legs in the air and tongues out to the side! This I WILL capture on camera today hopefully. I will also take some new pictures of the angels, to show you all how much they have grown, they really are turning into little exciting, amazing bundles of joy, every time either me or Leah go to the cage, we are greeted by the waggy tails, cries of joy and amazing look of our puppies.
I have to just add, All the sleepless nights and time and effort Leah has put into these puppies really does show, these pups were left to die and if it wasn’t for people like Leah and Leah’s mum Sylvia these little pups would not of had one look at life. Talking from experience of having one of Leah’s crazy hand raise pups, and as most of you know that all Leah’s agility dogs are also hand raises, the most important time of a dog’s life is the first 8 weeks, when they gain the trust in people and learn how to live life. And this is why people like Leah and Sylvia put so much time and dedication into these cases, and this is why I ask you all now to please please please spare just two minutes of your time, in signing a recent petition helping the case of the RSPCA ‘They shoot dog’s don’t they’. We as dog lovers, put so much work, effort and most of all LOVE into these animals, we ask you as members of the public to help us on our way of stopping cases like this stop, so we can put the time we have and effort into more cases such as our little angels!!
Anyway, I must go as here at the rescue we are nonstop! Our puppies are now nearly 4 weeks, but will still not be up for adoption for at least another 2 weeks, so please please keep checking and reading our updates, they are such special bundles. If anyone in the area or anyone coming to visit us any time soon could please collect and bring us some old newspaper, our puppies and us would really appreciate it!
Hopefully when we next update our puppies will all have names, although our bruiser boy has already inherited the name Barry, but whether this will stay or not I shall let you know!! Keep praying and sending your healing thoughts. xx

The Explorers!!!!!!

Well the pups are fearless, I let them out for breakfast and off they go. Herding them up feels like a full time job! We are now on 3 solid meals and 1 bottle. They could come off the bottle, but due to their bad start I want them to get the milk's nutrients for a while longer. So anyway today is the grand reveal.........they have names, they may not be to everybody's taste but they suit my pups!

GOOSE

Goose - truly fearless, he is the leader of the clan, always into trouble he plays his way through life. He is a strong solid pup, who eats like a horse! Previously the bruiser i'm not sure which suits him best? He was named goose as a friend of ours fell in love with him and wanted to call a pup Goose so here he is.

GIFT

Gift- as the dictionary says......the term gift can refer to anything that makes the other happier! Well she certainly does that. She is an individual ray of sun shine. Gift to me is the biggest fighter, she has been so close to death so many times, but never has she stopped fighting, and now with her poor little leg in bandage it seems that life really is throwing everything at her, but she will keep fighting! She is still the poorest of all my pups, her skin is a bit scabby and her coat not so shinny, but she is improving everyday!

GIDDY

Giddy is a beautiful, pretty young lady. She too is fearless, nearly always on her own delving into something she shouldn't be! She has a beautiful red tinge to her coat and she and Gander have slightly more coat than everybody else.

GOSH

Gosh and how stunning he is. What a lady killer. This young man will melt your heart sooner than you can blink. He is the next smallest after gift, but he is the one who was known as the twin to gift. He is very brave too, trotting off to find adventure.
Gander, the bruiser girl! She has a beautiful red tinge to her coat too and like Giddy has more coat than the others. She loves her food and often is trying to out run (well wobble) Goose to the food. She is as bold as brass and was the first the bark, play and howl! She adores exploring but too likes a cuddle as do they all.

GAMBLE

Gamble (looking quite mucky after breakfast, sorry!) is a fun, sweet, cuddly, yet appropriately naughty young lady. She too has been through the mill and again is a born survivor. Her nose looks a little better, but we are still concerned for her. She is a happy confident young lady (actually a bit of a tom boy, always getting grubby and playing with the boys!)

30-10-09

Here are some of the bodged attempts at trying to get my puppies photos, but they are still very cute.  They will be five weeks tomorrow and are doing fairly well. Gift's leg
still is worrying me and her skin is scabby at the moment, so she is on medicated bathes.  Gamble's nose is looking a bit better, and the others are full on little lumps! They are getting to be very active and love to get hold of their toys and have a good growl and tuggy game.
I was contemplating leaving the pups (except Gift and Gamble, as they are not right) here at Many Tears to be rehomed, as they are now on solid feeds etc, but they are not ready to go yet as they are soooo small, and I just cannot bring myself not to see the people who they end up with! I am also taking home an extra little soul, as Mini needs to see a specialist.
She will also keep Gift company as she will have to stay longer too. We have decided to take Mini off her mum as Matilda really doesn't want to know her anymore, and although she has been a very good mummy, she would much prefer to be cuddled than look after Mini. Matilda will be going into a local foster home so that she can be spayed in a few weeks. I will let you know how they all do.

05-11-09

Sorry for the lack of update, but wanted some news to tell you all.

Let's start with Gift.......
She has been to the specialist and her leg is not broken, but the bone is not growing, they have said to do 3 weeks physio and see if it helps, but they don't hold out any hope and think she will loose her leg! They have un bandaged the leg, which is scary as it now bends the wrong way at the wrist! This now brings me to an important subject.  Whilst I looked after Many Tears I was totally shocked at

       1. How many people queried the adoption fee
           and
       2. How many people argue they should pay less for a puppy as they aren't neutered. I can't tell you how angry these two things made me!!!!

£150 for a dog that has had everything done is nothing and does not even cover what they have done 99% of the time. I would love to see people try and get all that done at their vets for the same price!!!!

But the puppy thing makes me even more angry! Puppies are desirable and easier to home, so I guess in a way you are paying a little for the privilege.  However they have still had at least £80 odd pounds of treatments and yes the rest goes as a donation but it goes towards the dogs with the eye problems and the tummy tucks which are £3000 ago! Those dogs still go out at £150 or less!!!! Gift is the perfect example so far she has had well in excess of £250 spent on her and there will still be more so what I'm getting at us please look at the bigger picture.  There is still not nearly enough money to do all the ops that are needed, we can only do our best. My mum practically kills herself on a daily basis trying to help every animal!

 Off my soap box........
Mini is coming on although I don't think she'll ever be normal. If this is the case she will need an extra special home with one other quiet dog and people with a lot of time for her! She is very loving and enjoys being cuddled, but gets very confused as to where she is, and as yet can't feed herself.

I'm really surprised that the only offers for my pups are to foster them, obviously I will keep them till they go to their forever homes as I couldn't not see it the whole way through! But they are up for adoption now, but just can't go until at least the 14th of Nov.

Yesterday they grew ears! Slightly spaniel like so maybe they are cocker x? Still not sure, but still pretty small.

The rest are all doing really well, eating well, Gamble's nose is no worse and I hope whatever was going on with it has stopped now. They are great fun, and full of naughtiness! They play, tug and cuddle and are extremely forward going!
